These kids, whether they be in 4-h, come purely from a show background, or have no experience at all but a desire to learn, are the future of this great sport. This program will allow the PVDF to give back, and earn so much more in return.

September in the Puget Sound area of Washington State means “THE FAIR.” The Puyallup Fair is one of the ten largest fairs in the world and runs for 17 days each September. Well over a million people will come through the gates each season to see the animals, crafts, arts, flowers, concerts, rodeo and carnival.

For the second year, Puyallup Valley Dog Fanciers has organized All Around Dogs at the Fair to show the public what purebred dogs are all about. The goal is to show the general public that purebred dogs are excellent family dogs capable of engaging in many activities with their people.

This year we had 30 booths in the large barn with representatives from specialty clubs, all breed clubs, 4-H, Guide Dogs, therapy dogs, field dogs, a community college vet tech program, and the acclaimed Purdy Prison Pet Program. For those that don’t know, Purdy is a women’s prison. Years ago they started taking shelter dogs and teaching the inmates to train and care for them. When the dogs graduate, they are placed in service dog organizations.

There is an indoor ring and an outdoor arena where demonstrations were held. The US Army K-9’s showed the work that our military dogs are doing around the world. US Customs brought a contingent of their dogs who sniff out drugs, firearms, explosives, etc. at the airports, and other points of entry into this country.

Richard Matzke, Tuxedo Kennels, did several demonstrations each day of bird dogs working in the field. He is a wonderful presenter and explains the different ways pointers, spaniels and retrievers are used in hunting. This year he has a white standard poodle retrieving live birds. He was able to emphasize that each breed was developed for a specific task. This fit with the core message of the whole weekend – “Purebred dogs were carefully developed over many years for specific purposes by responsible breeders.”

In addition to marching in the opening parade with carts, the Saint Bernard Club of Puget Sound did a demonstration weight pull each day and then had Saints pulling carts for free kiddy rides. Carol Nelson of Puyallup Valley Dog Fanciers showed how junior showmanship is judged, using three of her grandchildren. A group fun match was held each day to illustrate dog show procedure. Chuck Bagnell, President of PVDF, narrated and explained a little about each breed being presented.

Family Dog Center set up and ran a sample agility trial to show the public what can be done with a little training. The Seattle Drill Team gave a team obedience demonstration. Several breed clubs showed off their obedience and rally dogs. Northwest Search and Rescue showed how bloodhounds are used and gave the children a chance to see these dogs up close.

The booths were wonderfully decorated. Club members manned the booths from 10 am to 10 pm each day so that there were knowledgeable people to answer the many questions. The Border Terriers set up their portable tunnel with windows so everyone could see the terriers “going to ground.” Several different coated breeds were being groomed so that families could see what it takes to keep a Bichon fluffy and white or a Bouvier’s beard clean. I don’t know how the member of the Old English Sheepdog Club of Greater Seattle managed to deal with sticky little hands in all the coats.

The most important part of the three days was the opportunity to reach out to people that had only the vaguest idea of what purebred dogs are about. These are not people who attend dog shows. These are mostly families with young children. Many have a dog at home but had never considered acquiring a purebred dog. By seeing the variety of activities available and meeting serious dog fanciers, some of these people may become new participants in our sport. At least now they have seen that purebred dogs are calm, loving, happy family members that like to do fun things with their people. And responsible breeders are good neighbors.

Thank you letter from the Saint Bernard Club of America

Here’s news about what’s happening in the Great Pacific NorthWest;

Fran Stephens, one of our own, and a member of the Puyallup Valley Dog Fancier’s, the Mount Rainier Working Dog Club and the PBCPS, is co-chair of a LARGE event at the Annual Western Washington Fair in Puyallup. It’s one of this nation’s top 10 State Fairs and attended by over 1.3 million people each year!

It’s called “ALL AROUND DOGS” and it takes up a whole animal barn at the fair. There are 30 booths involving something to do with dogs and at least 25 of them have dogs there for the public to see, pet and ask questions about. There are K-9 working dogs, Pugs, Bulldog Rescue, Dogs being trained by Prison inmates, the whole gamot! Quite an event.

The Saint Bernard Club of Puget Sound is there with many Saints doing weightpull demos, kiddie rides in carts, and just laying around while the public pets and scratches our beloved breed. We’ve got people taking pictures with “Woofer” (WDCH Ch Vicdory’s Julius Ceasar) who was the Rescue dog in Disney’s “SNOW BUDDIES” kids movie. Thank you to Loretta Griffin, Vicki Graves, Dorothy Jaeger and Joe Wolf, his owners.

The Fair runs 16 days, but we’re only there for the first weekend. Friday, Saturday & Sunday. We split the day up into 2 hour shifts with no more than three dogs on shift at a time with three handlers. It works out great with one male, one female, one puppy or veteran and both coat types at a time. The whole club gets involved and everyone has a wonderful time, “Doin The Puyallup.”

This is just one of our public education events.

Thank you Fran for working so hard putting this together.

Thank you letter from Dane Outreach

Susan –

On behalf of Dane Outreach, thank you for hosting the Puyallup Fair barn this year. It was a job just to get one booth organized…so we very much appreciate the organization it took to get the whole barn and multiple breed groups organized!

We feel the event was well worth our time in terms of public education about the breed and proper breed care.

We hope you plan on hosting this event again next year. Dane Outreach would like to be involved again. If you could please add our name to your contact list for next year, we’d appreciate it. We jumped in at the last minute this year so we look forward to a longer planning time next year.

Again, thank you for your efforts!
